Vodafone engineer Rowan Chesmer recently made a historic space video call using normal 4G/5G smartphones and satellites, paving the way for universal digital connectivity and closing mobile coverage gaps. This achievement marks a significant milestone in Vodafone’s mission to connect everyone, no matter where they are. The satellite technology used offers a full mobile broadband experience without the need for special equipment, enabling users in remote areas to make video calls, access the internet, and use online messaging services.
The call was made from a remote area in Wales to Vodafone Group Chief Executive Margherita Della Valle, with astronaut Tim Peake joining in from Newbury, UK. The event marked the unveiling of the first space to land gateway in Europe, which seamlessly connects satellites to Vodafone’s terrestrial network. Vodafone plans to offer the first commercial direct-to-smartphone broadband satellite service in Europe starting in 2025 to 2026.
Vodafone’s collaboration with AST SpaceMobile, an innovative space-based broadband provider, is a significant step towards closing coverage gaps and improving digital connectivity in Europe. By combining satellite technology with existing land-based networks, Vodafone aims to provide customers with a seamless and ubiquitous communication experience.
