Milner Library at Illinois State University has expanded its collection with over 80 titles focused on Indigenous peoples in response to the efforts of the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access Committee. The committee identified gaps in the library’s offerings and saw an opportunity for growth. These new acquisitions will support teaching and research related to Indigenous peoples, including works by and about Indigenous groups in the region as well as throughout the United States. Instructional Assistant Professor Dr. Shannon Epplett highlights the importance of having Native American-focused materials available for students on campus, citing the novel “Indian Horse” by Richard Wagamese as a key resource for his Native literature and film studies courses. The interdisciplinary scope of the acquired titles aims to reflect the varied experiences of Indigenous peoples within the Illinois State community and beyond. The acquisitions will also support research in visual and theatre arts. The IDEA Committee acknowledges the contributions of Dr. Epplett, Dr. Ann Haugo, and Heather Koopmans in recommending titles for acquisition. Researchers and faculty members are encouraged to submit purchase requests for materials not currently available in the library’s collection.
