Illinois Senator Sally Turner has reintroduced a bill in the Senate that would exempt tiny homes from a 2023 state law requiring all homes to be built with electric vehicle charging capacity. The bill is aimed at helping veterans have affordable housing without facing government red tape. Nonprofit organizations, like the Central Illinois Veterans Commission, have found the mandate to be costly and burdensome to their veteran housing projects.
Sen. Turner emphasized the importance of providing affordable housing for veterans, particularly those who are handicapped and in need of specific accommodations. The bill has passed unanimously out of the Senate Judiciary Committee and now moves to the Senate floor for further consideration.
The bill, which had previously passed the Senate but died in the House, is seen as a continuation of the work of late advocate Joe Schaler, who championed providing homeless veterans with a place to call home. CIVC Chair Marsha Fernandes praised the bill for removing unnecessary roadblocks and allowing organizations to focus on their mission of providing safe, affordable housing for those who have served their country.
