Russian authorities allege nuclear power plant was the target of a large-scale Ukrainian drone assault | Latest Updates

The escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine shows no signs of abating, with both countries engaging in daily barrages of drone and missile attacks. A recent Ukrainian drone attack targeted Russia’s energy infrastructure, with 104 drones reportedly involved in raids across western Russia. One drone was shot down while attempting to strike a nuclear power plant in Smolensk, although there were no casualties or damage reported. Russia’s air defences also destroyed drones over multiple regions, including areas near the Ukrainian border where incursions have occurred.

Amid the ongoing attacks, the possibility of peace talks remains slim. Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed willingness to hold negotiations with Ukraine, but ruled out speaking directly with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whom he deemed as “illegitimate” due to his expired presidential term during martial law. Zelenskyy accused Putin of prolonging the war and frustrating efforts to stop the fighting. The return of Donald Trump as US president has also revived rhetoric over the potential for a ceasefire, although Kyiv has warned against being excluded from peace talks between Russia and the US.

Despite calls for negotiations, the conflict continues to escalate, with both countries targeting each other’s energy infrastructure. The focus on power and oil facilities amid winter underscores the severity of the situation. With the two leaders engaging in verbal sparring and little progress towards peace talks, the ongoing conflict shows no signs of abating, raising concerns about the humanitarian impact and potential for further escalation.
