TikTok Emerges as a Key News Source for Americans
A recent Pew Research Center study revealed that TikTok, the popular social media platform, has become a significant source of news for many Americans. Approximately 52% of TikTok users, equivalent to 17% of all U.S. adults, regularly consume news on the site. However, despite this trend, less than 1% of the accounts followed by Americans on TikTok belong to journalists or news outlets. This raises questions about how users are accessing news content on the platform.
The study also found that while institutional news sources represent a small fraction of accounts followed by TikTok users, many users still follow at least five journalist or media outlet accounts. Additionally, non-newsroom accounts also post news-related content on a regular basis, reaching wide audiences.
Furthermore, the study revealed that TikTok users consume news from a variety of sources, including influencers, celebrities, and other unknown individuals who are not affiliated with news organizations. The majority of users visit TikTok primarily for entertainment purposes, with news content being encountered as part of their overall experience on the platform.
Overall, the study highlights the evolving landscape of news consumption, especially among younger Americans who are more likely to passively consume news on social media platforms like TikTok. The findings suggest that while traditional news outlets remain important, users are increasingly turning to a diverse range of sources for their daily news intake.
