Illinois students who started school during the COVID pandemic scored lower in reading and math compared to previous years, according to the latest National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results. Fourth graders in particular suffered from gaps in education due to remote learning disruptions during the pandemic. However, eighth graders either held steady or outperformed their peers in 2022 testing. In Chicago Public Schools, eighth graders showed improvement in math and reading scores, while fourth graders saw a decline in reading but an increase in math scores. Disparities persist between Black and Latino students compared to white and Asian American peers. State standardized test scores showed an increase in reading but continued lagging in math scores. The state is considering a math and numeracy plan to address this issue. Superintendent Tony Sanders sees the NAEP data as a cause for celebration, indicating overall academic growth in Illinois students.
