Joseph Lynskey, a survivor of a harrowing incident where he was pushed onto New York City subway tracks, spoke with ABC News about the near-death experience. Lynskey, 45, suffered a fractured skull, broken ribs, and a ruptured spleen after being pushed by a stranger at the 18th Street station in Manhattan. Recounting the terrifying moment, Lynskey described how he thought he was going to die as he saw the oncoming train lights approaching him.
Despite the danger of the electrified rail, Lynskey screamed for help until a woman responded and kept him calm until rescuers arrived. Lynskey spent seven days in the hospital recovering from his injuries, while the suspect, Kamel Hawkins, fled the scene and was later arrested. Hawkins has been indicted on charges including attempted murder.
Reflecting on the incident, Lynskey chose to focus on healing and moving forward, emphasizing the importance of life. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg condemned the attack as a brutal act of violence, stating that efforts will continue to hold those who threaten the safety of subway riders accountable. The NYPD and Gov. Kathy Hochul have announced increased patrols in response to the incident.
