A year after the tragic death of Barrington teenager Marin Lacson, community members continue to push for safety improvements at the train crossing where she was killed. Despite promises from officials, a pedestrian gate still has not been installed at the Metra crossing. Residents, including Marin’s best friend Katy Morris, are frustrated and concerned that someone else could be killed on the same tracks. At a recent vigil and village board meeting, students and advocates made emotional pleas for action. The Village of Barrington says they are actively working on rail safety projects, including a pedestrian gate installation at the Metra crossing. They are also considering a pedestrian grade separation project at another location near the high school. In the meantime, the community has created a foundation and scholarship in Marin’s name to honor her memory. Residents continue to press for improvements to ensure the safety of pedestrians and prevent future tragedies.
