Elijah Alexander Ligon, a promising young student known for his academic achievements and love of science, computers, and animals, passed away at the age of 18 on January 24, 2025. He was recognized by the College Board National Recognition Program during his junior year at Mount Vernon Township High School. Elijah, who attended Summersville Grade School and St. Mary’s Catholic School, spent summers at ID Tech Camp at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He will be buried with his beloved cat Sesame. Elijah is survived by his mother, grandmother, grandfather, aunts, uncles, cousins, and other family members. A public visitation will be held on February 1, 2025, at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, IL, followed by a private funeral service and interment at Kirk Cemetery. Donations in Elijah’s memory can be made to Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Mount Vernon or the Jefferson County African American Heritage Committee (JCAAHC).
