A powerful storm named Eowyn hit Ireland on Friday, causing record-breaking winds and disrupting travel. The storm brought gales, with gusts of up to 60 miles per hour, to Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and parts of England and Wales. A gust of 114 miles per hour was recorded in County Galway, breaking a 1945 Irish record. ESB Networks reported that about 725,000 customers were without power, impacting the nation’s water supply as well. Irish Water said 138,000 people were without water, with more at risk of losing service. The storm also brought rain showers, hail, and snow to the region.
The storm disrupted travel, with public transport suspended in Ireland and Northern Rail urging customers to avoid traveling. Flights were grounded at airports across Ireland and Britain. The strong winds were caused by a high-speed jet stream, which also affected weather patterns in the United States, bringing record-breaking cold temperatures and wind chills.
Eowyn is the most severe storm Ireland has experienced since 2017, and is expected to clear into the Norwegian Sea on Saturday. However, another storm system is forecast to bring similar hazards for Britain on Sunday and Monday. The last time Britain experienced a storm of this strength was with Storm Darragh in early December, which also had wind speeds of 93 miles per hour in Wales.
