Yu Shang Food Recalls 72,000 Pounds of Ready-to-Eat Meat and Poultry Due to Listeria Outbreak Linked to 2 Cases in Illinois

Listeria Outbreak Prompts Major Recall of Yu Shang Meat Products

A recent listeria outbreak linked to ready-to-eat meat and poultry products from Yu Shang Food Inc. has resulted in 11 illnesses across four states, including nine hospitalizations and the tragic death of an infant, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Spartanburg, South Carolina-based company is recalling over 72,000 pounds of potentially contaminated meat and poultry items, produced before October 28. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) indicates that the affected products were distributed to retailers nationwide and are also available for purchase online.

Routine testing by the FSIS last month confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in these products, with genetic sequencing underway to link them to the specific strain involved in the illnesses. Illnesses have primarily been reported in California, with seven cases, along with two in Illinois and one each in New York and New Jersey. Investigators have noted connections between sick individuals and markets selling Yu Shang products.

In a heartbreaking case in California, a pregnant woman and her twins were affected, leading to the death of both infants. While listeria was found in both the mother and one twin, the other twin’s sample returned negative results. Yu Shang has stated there is no definitive proof tying their products to the illnesses.

Consumers are advised not to consume any recalled products and to return them to their place of purchase or dispose of them safely. Cleaning any surfaces or containers that may have contacted the recalled foods is also recommended. Listeria infection, which can lead to listeriosis, is particularly dangerous for older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Those experiencing symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
