Kicking Off Deer Season in Illinois

Press Release: Successful Opening Day for Illinois Firearm Deer Season

Illinois—The first part of the firearm deer season in Illinois kicked off on Friday under favorable weather conditions, leading to a successful start for hunters across the state. Dan Skinner, the forest wildlife program manager for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, reported a steady influx of hunters throughout the day.

At the Ogle County check station, approximately one-third of the deer harvested were taken with rifles, thanks to the recent legalization of select single-shot centerfires last year. Skinner noted that many hunters have opted for these rifles due to their accuracy and reduced recoil. He anticipates that by the end of the season, rifles will account for 25 to 33 percent of the total harvest, an increase from around 20 percent in its inaugural year.

Weather played a key role in this year’s opening, with Skinner commenting on the improved conditions as the stormy weather cleared. Reports from various hunters revealed a promising start: in Clark County, heavy snowfall led to increased deer activity in local fields, while in Ogle County, two large bucks were reported down on opening morning, confirming forecasts of a fruitful hunting weekend.

Scouting efforts in Edwards County revealed the presence of a notable shooter buck and several does, further driving the anticipation for the remainder of the season. Additionally, the Kankakee and Jo Daviess check stations reported a healthy ratio of bucks to does, with some hunters enjoying bountiful days.

Overall, with positive reports filtering in from across the state, the 2023 firearm deer season appears to be off to an excellent start, promising enthusiasm and engagement among Illinois hunters.
