Gators Stay Undefeated with Dominant Win Over Southern Illinois
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — In a commanding performance, the 21st-ranked Florida Gators cruised to a 93-68 victory against Southern Illinois on Friday night at Exactech Arena/O’Connell Center, maintaining their unblemished record this season. Guard Alijah Martin led the charge, showcasing his scoring prowess with 32 points, including 18 in the first half. The fifth-year transfer from Florida Atlantic shot 11-for-19 from the field and notably hit eight of 13 attempts from beyond the arc, tying the school record for most three-pointers made in a game at the O’Dome.
Martin’s offensive explosion included a streak of four consecutive three-pointers in the second half, propelling the Gators to a significant lead. Sophomore forward Thomas Haugh also made waves, scoring a career-high 19 points and contributing seven rebounds off the bench. His performance complemented Martin’s, as he matched his best with three three-pointers and recorded four blocks.
Florida’s shooting displayed efficiency, achieving 46.7% overall and 41.0% from three-point range, while committing only six turnovers throughout the game. Despite being out-rebounded 49-46—particularly on the offensive glass—the Gators showcased their resilience, closing out the half strong with a 46-25 lead.
This win marks Florida’s sixth consecutive victory to start the season, a feat accomplished just twice since the end of the Billy Donovan era. The Gators will next face Wake Forest in a Thanksgiving match-up at the ESPN Events Invitational in Kissimmee, Florida, as they prepare for the tough competition ahead.
Coach Todd Golden continues to impress with his recruitment strategy, particularly with Martin’s impactful performance, indicating promising prospects for the rest of the season.
