Chicago Illuminates Holiday Tree in Millennium Park

Millennium Park Kicks Off Holiday Season with Spectacular Tree Lighting

CHICAGO (CBS) — The holiday season officially commenced in Chicago as Millennium Park illuminated its official Christmas tree on Friday night, captivating Michigan Avenue with 50,000 dazzling lights. CBS News Chicago was at the forefront of the celebration, with anchors Joe Donlon and Irika Sargent leading the momentous occasion by flipping the switch on the 53-foot Colorado blue spruce, graciously donated by the Holden-Shaddick family of Logan Square. This beautiful tree, which was planted over 50 years ago by former city worker Jim Mulligan, has become a cherished symbol of the festivities.

In addition to the tree lighting ceremony, attendees can enjoy a Hawaiian-themed holiday market featuring numerous local vendors, which is available this weekend only. The popular ice skating rink also returned, inviting families to skate until February 2. Enthusiastic couples at the rink expressed their excitement about the festive atmosphere, with one stating, "It’s just what Chicago needs every year.”

As festivities continued, attendees were reminded of street closures due to the event, including Washington Street and parts of Michigan Avenue, which will be closed until 11:59 p.m. Friday. Additionally, the Chicago Cultural Center and Design Museum of Chicago closed its doors to the public for the duration of the ceremony.

After the tree lighting, visitors were encouraged to explore the nearby Christkindlmarket in Daley Plaza, which opened its doors on the same day, featuring an array of holiday offerings. Operating hours for the market will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and extended hours on weekends through December 24.

Chicago’s rich holiday traditions are back, with the promise of joyful gatherings and celebrations throughout the month.
