Will County Judge Matthew G. Bertani Assigned to Third District Appellate Court
Will County Circuit Judge Matthew G. Bertani has been appointed to the Third District Appellate Court of Illinois to fill the vacancy left by retiring Justice Adrienne Albrecht. His appointment, effective January 1, 2024, will last until November 30, 2026, as announced by the Illinois Supreme Court.
Spanning seven counties—Bureau, DuPage, Grundy, Iroquois, Kankakee, LaSalle, and Will—the Third Appellate District will benefit from Bertani’s extensive judicial experience. "Judge Bertani is a proven judge whose familiarity with complex matters is unparalleled," said Supreme Court Justice Mary K. O’Brien. "His legal acumen, integrity, and demeanor are well respected among peers and the local bar."
Bertani, who first took the bench in 2010, has dealt with a broad spectrum of cases including family law, traffic, civil jury, and probate. As a judge of the 12th Judicial Circuit, Subcircuit 4, in Will County, he has demonstrated his dedication through programs like the Lawyers Assistance Panel and as a Mentor to New Judges.
Expressing gratitude for his new role, Bertani remarked, “I look forward to serving the People of the Third District with the same resolve and care as my predecessor.” He also noted his regret over the upcoming retirement of Justice Mary McDade, stating, "The Court will be diminished by her absence."
Before his judicial career, Bertani was a principal at Riazio & Bertani in Morris and served as an assistant state’s attorney in Grundy County. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Drake University and a Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from the University of Arizona College of Law. His appointment signifies a new chapter for the Third District, with expectations of impactful contributions to the judiciary.
