Illinois Reports Spike in Pregnancy Complications, Northwestern Medicine Study Warns
CHICAGO — A new study conducted by Northwestern Medicine reveals a troubling rise in pregnancy complications across Illinois, analyzing over one million pregnancies from 2016 to 2023. The findings indicate a sharp increase in maternal health issues, with vaginal birth complications surging by over 22% and cesarean birth complications escalating by a staggering 48%.
Dr. Mugdha Mokashi, an OBGYN resident at Northwestern Medicine, highlighted the alarming trend, stating, "Patients are getting sicker, and we have a higher rate of complications now than we did in the past among Illinois births." This surge occurs despite increased awareness and preventative interventions aimed at improving maternal health.
The study underscores the stark racial disparities in complications, with non-Hispanic Black mothers facing more than double the rate of complications compared to their non-Hispanic white counterparts. This inequality reflects ongoing systemic issues in access to quality maternal healthcare.
Contributing factors to the increasing complications were identified, including chronic health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, mental health disorders, and obesity, which have become prevalent among expectant mothers. Researchers stress the urgency of addressing these health issues prior to conception and throughout pregnancy.
Additionally, the study calls for comprehensive policy changes aimed at alleviating poverty, enhancing perinatal health initiatives, and ultimately reducing racial disparities. By prioritizing these areas, stakeholders hope to improve outcomes for mothers and infants across Illinois.
