Latest Update on Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Kyiv Closes Parliament in Response to Putin’s Launch of New Hypersonic Medium-Range Ballistic Missile

The remains of a car that exploded in Sevastopol, killing a Russian naval officer, have sparked concerns about escalating tensions in the region. Ukraine shut down its parliament over security fears after Vladimir Putin launched a new hypersonic medium-range ballistic missile at a Ukrainian military facility.

The missile strike was in response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory using US and British missiles. Putin claimed the use of the new missile, dubbed Oreshnik, was necessary to defend against foreign aggression. The missile has a range of more than 3,400 miles and can carry nuclear warheads, posing a significant threat to Europe and the US.

Nato has expressed support for Ukraine and denounced Russia’s actions. The US formally withdrew from the INF Treaty with Russia in 2019, accusing Moscow of developing prohibited weapons. The escalating conflict has raised concerns about a potential global conflict, with Putin warning of further strikes against countries supporting Ukraine.

Meanwhile, UK Foreign Secretary has vowed to support Ukraine against Russian aggression. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned Russia as an “insane neighbor” and accused Putin of searching for more weapons to use against his country.

As tensions continue to escalate, analysts warn that the use of long-range weapons may not significantly alter the battlefield dynamics. However, the involvement of the UK and US in the conflict has drawn criticism from the Russian government, with the Russian ambassador accusing them of deliberate escalation.

The detonation of the car in Sevastopol and the subsequent missile strikes highlight the volatile situation in the region and the potential for further conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
