Dissent against Russia’s actions, such as the invasion of Ukraine, can lead to imprisonment, as seen with the case of political prisoner Viktor Plescanov. Plescanov faced harsh conditions in prison, leading to a suicide attempt, before international pressure resulted in his pardon. However, many political prisoners remain in Transnistrian jails, posing a potential obstacle to Moldova’s EU accession.
The existence of political prisoners and Russian influence in Transnistria could complicate Moldova’s integration into the EU, as it may bring Russian and Ukrainian separatists with them.
