OpenAI is facing a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by news agency ANI in the Delhi High Court, accusing the company of using its content without permission to train and operate ChatGPT. ANI is seeking damages of Rs 2 crore and a permanent injunction to stop further use of its material. In response, OpenAI has stressed its support for the media industry and its use of legal principles to develop AI systems. The company highlighted collaborations with media outlets worldwide, including in India, to improve the news experience. The legal dispute raises questions about the relationship between AI and copyright law, with the court considering expert guidance on the issue. OpenAI informed the court that it had removed links to ANI’s content and denied spreading misinformation through ChatGPT. The next hearing is scheduled for January 2024.
