BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 8/7 Alabama men’s basketball team showcased its offensive strength, defeating No. 25/20 Illinois, 100-87, on Wednesday night at Legacy Arena during the 2024 C.M. Newton Classic. With this victory, Alabama improved its season record to 4-1.

Grant Nelson spearheaded the attack with a season-high 23 points and eight rebounds, while Labaron Philon nearly achieved a triple-double, contributing 16 points, nine assists, and seven boards. Joining them in double figures were Aden Holloway with 18 points and Latrell Wrightsell Jr. with 16.

The Fighting Illini (3-1) were led by Will Riley, who registered 18 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.

Postgame, Alabama head coach Nate Oats praised Illinois’ talent but highlighted his team’s resilience and defensive effort. "This was a big win. Illinois has multiple future NBA players and they beat us on the boards, but our defensive efforts were solid," Oats noted, emphasizing the importance of their ball movement, which resulted in a season-high 23 assists against just seven turnovers.

In the first half, Alabama set the tone early, shooting an impressive 76% from two-point range, with Nelson leading the scoring surge with 19 points. The Crimson Tide managed to hold a significant 52-38 lead at halftime, showcasing strong teamwork and defensive tenacity.

Despite a push from Illinois in the second half, Alabama consistently widened the gap, with Wrightsell Jr. providing crucial points late in the game.

Looking ahead, the Crimson Tide will participate in the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas beginning November 26, with their first match against No. 7/7 Houston.
