Citizens Utility Board Celebrates 40 Years of Consumer Advocacy in Illinois
Since its inception in 1984, the nonpartisan Citizens Utility Board (CUB) of Illinois has championed consumer rights, successfully saving ratepayers an estimated $20 billion by blocking unjust rate hikes and securing refunds. Executive Director Sarah Moskowitz emphasizes that despite significant achievements, many residents remain unaware of CUB’s essential role in utility matters. Created by the Illinois Legislature without state funding, CUB has evolved to educate consumers on various utility-related issues—from warning about deceptive energy sellers to providing tips on reducing cellphone bills.
CUB has notably influenced state laws, including the 2021 Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, aiming for 100% carbon-free energy in Illinois by 2045. Recent initiatives have led to a $1.6 billion reduction in proposed electric and gas rate increases, highlighting CUB’s commitment to consumer interests amidst skyrocketing utility costs. In addition, the organization’s scrutiny of the Peoples Gas pipeline replacement project has raised alarms over escalating costs and slow progress.
To mark its 40th anniversary, CUB is hosting over 300 educational events throughout Illinois, offering energy-saving advice and personalized utility bill analysis at utility bill clinics. Educational programs also inform residents about incentives for solar energy through initiatives such as the Illinois Shines program. CUB’s consumer hotline remains available at (800) 669-5556 for those seeking assistance in understanding their utility bills.
As winter approaches, CUB plans to assist low-income households with resources like the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Metzow gives a clear message: "We are committed to ensuring that vulnerable communities do not get left behind as Illinois transitions to renewable energy." For four decades, CUB has stood firm as a vital advocate for utility consumers in Illinois.
