The beloved Sweet Basil Cafe at Prairie Crossing in Springfield has recently closed its doors for good. Fans of the popular breakfast and lunch spot, known for their gluten-free pancakes, will be disappointed to find the cafe locked on Monday morning. The former manager, Kathy Duncan, confirmed that the store at 4241 Conestoga Drive closed on Friday, Aug. 23, but did not provide a reason for the sudden closure.
Sweet Basil Cafe is a family-owned chain with locations across Illinois, including Rockford, Peoria, Skokie, Hanover Park, and Champaign. It is unclear if any other locations have also closed. The Springfield location opened in November 2020, taking over the space previously occupied by O’Charley’s.
Despite the closure, the company website has not been updated, and they are still accepting applications for the Springfield location. This closure comes on the heels of another restaurant in Springfield, the Kentucky Fried Chicken at 3150 S. Sixth St., which also shut down abruptly on Aug. 19.
