Romanian gymnast Sabrina Maneca-Voinea and the Romanian Gymnastics Federation have filed an appeal with the Swiss Federal Tribunal challenging the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision to reject Voinea’s complaint about being wrongly docked 0.10 points for going out of bounds during the floor exercise final at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This appeal follows the controversial stripping of Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal in the same event despite her appeal being found valid by a review panel. The U.S. Gymnastics and Olympic Committees also plan to appeal to the Swiss Federal Tribunal based on procedural errors and video evidence refuting CAS’ ruling.
Voinea’s appeal centers around the deduction she received for going out of bounds, which replays show did not actually happen. Without this deduction, her score would have been higher than Chiles and Ana Barbosu, who ultimately received the bronze medal after the medal reallocation. CAS rejected Voinea’s appeal citing it as a “field-of-play” decision that cannot be interfered with by the tribunal.
The controversy surrounding the floor exercise final at the 2024 Paris Olympics continues to escalate with multiple appeals being filed and a dispute over the rightful bronze medalist. The outcome of these appeals will determine whether Chiles, Voinea, or Barbosu ultimately receive the bronze medal from the event.
