In Chicago, corruption breeds both shame and perverse pride

Chicago has a long history of corruption, with the recent example of convicted former Ald. Ed Burke and accused former Speaker of the House Michael Madigan adding to the city’s infamous list of politicians involved in scandals. The University of Illinois at Chicago’s political science department has named Chicago as the country’s most corrupt city for four consecutive years. The city has a legacy of corrupt politicians dating back to its earliest settlers. Despite efforts for reform, such as by former prosecutor James Thompson, progress has been slow.

Various authors and historians have chronicled Chicago’s history of corruption, with figures like John “Bathhouse John” Coughlin and Michael “Hinky Dink” Kenna setting the bar for aldermanic corruption in the early 20th century. The city has seen notorious figures like William Lorimer and Mayor William Hale Thompson, who had ties to organized crime, further perpetuating corruption.

Despite efforts by reformers like Dick Simpson and James Thompson, political corruption continues to persist in Chicago. Many believe that political corruption is ingrained in the city’s culture, despite the occasional push for reform. The fight against corruption remains an ongoing battle, with hope that the people of Chicago will ultimately prevail in creating a more transparent and ethical political system.
