A 32-year-old woman is currently in a critical condition in the hospital after being stabbed at the Notting Hill carnival, according to the Metropolitan police. The annual west London celebration saw a total of three stabbings, with a 29-year-old man also hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, and a 24-year-old man whose condition is still unknown.
Fifteen officers were reportedly assaulted during the event, although none sustained serious injuries. A total of 90 arrests were made on Sunday, with offenses ranging from assault on an emergency worker to drug possession, theft, and public order offenses.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the police described the carnival as a fantastic celebration that attracted hundreds of thousands of people. However, they noted that a minority chose to engage in criminal behavior and violence, resulting in the arrests and incidents that occurred.
Earlier in the day, the police had been granted additional search powers to prevent further violence after a man was stabbed and knives were found at the scene. The arrests made at the carnival were for various alleged crimes, including possession with intent to supply, sexual offenses, and robbery.
The Metropolitan police have worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of attendees at the Notting Hill carnival through a carefully planned policing operation, but incidents of violence and crime marred the festivities for some.
