Traffic delays and congestion following tragic hit-and-run incident on NBC Chicago

A tragic hit-and-run crash on I-57 and 111th Street in Chicago on Monday morning resulted in the closure of northbound lanes and heavy traffic during the commute, according to the Illinois State Police. The incident occurred around 3:48 a.m. when a vehicle on the right shoulder had a passenger standing outside who was struck by another vehicle that fled the scene. Unfortunately, the passenger was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.

In response to the crash, all northbound lanes on I-57 were closed, causing significant delays and congestion. Traffic was redirected to 119th Street as authorities investigated the situation. NBC 5 Traffic Reporter Kye Martin advised drivers to consider alternative routes such as Halsted, Vincennes, or the Bishop Ford to avoid the affected area.

Fortunately, by 7:45 a.m., the lanes were reopened, allowing traffic to resume normal flow. The Illinois State Police are actively investigating this hit-and-run incident and are seeking any information or leads regarding the unknown vehicle involved. The tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant on the roads and reporting any suspicious or dangerous driving behavior to authorities.
