The Iowa Hawkeyes are gearing up for another football season, aiming for another 10-win season. The team will face new opponents this year, including former Pac-12 teams UCLA and Washington who have joined the Big Ten conference. However, before Big Ten play begins, the No. 25 Hawkeyes will host three non-conference opponents, starting with Illinois State on Saturday. Head coach Kirk Ferentz is suspended for the season opener due to a self-imposed suspension after a recruiting violation involving improper contact with a player. Assistant coach Jon Budmayr is also suspended. Seth Wallace, assistant defensive coordinator, will lead the team in Ferentz’s absence. The game against Illinois State will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network and can be streamed on Fox Sports Live. Tickets are still available for the season opener, with prices listed at $34 per ticket. The Hawkeyes have not lost a non-conference season-opener since 2013. The team is ranked No. 25 in preseason polls, with two preseason All-Americans on the defensive side. KCCI is launching a new pregame show, “Big College Kickoff,” to provide local coverage of NCAA Division I football teams in Iowa. The Iowa football team will also continue their partnership with the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital for the annual Kid Captains program, with Week 1 featuring 7-year-old Carter Schmidt as the Kid Captain.
