Dolton, Illinois has been embroiled in scandal as a top police officer, Lewis A. Lacey, and ally of Mayor Tiffany Henyard, was indicted on federal charges of bankruptcy fraud. Lacey is accused of concealing assets and income to avoid paying creditors and settling a lawsuit. The indictment alleges that Lacey made false statements and committed perjury in his bankruptcy case in order to underreport his income and conceal bank accounts. Lacey, who has been a supporter of the scandal-ridden Mayor Henyard, was fired from his position as deputy police chief last week.
Mayor Henyard has been accused of misdeeds including weaponizing police raids and lavish spending with taxpayer money. Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot was hired to investigate Dolton’s financial situation, revealing staggering deficits and misuse of village funds, including purchases on the village credit card at various retailers. The investigation also uncovered exorbitant overtime pay for certain police officers.
The accusations of financial wrongdoing in Dolton have sparked an ongoing FBI investigation. Mayor Henyard has faced various allegations, including misconduct reported by six individuals to the FBI. Henyard, who has been living an extravagant lifestyle despite the town’s low median income, is also facing scrutiny for a cancer charity and an alleged sexual assault incident involving one of her allies. The ongoing scandals in Dolton have put pressure on the city, which has a population of just over 20,000. The federal charges against Lacey are seen as part of a larger effort by the government to build a case against Mayor Henyard.
