Elgin’s Larkin Place renovation has been awarded the 2024 Landmarks Illinois Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award, recognizing the conversion of the historic Larkin Center into a 48-unit affordable housing complex. The award will be presented at a ceremony on Oct. 18 in Chicago.
In other news, the village of West Dundee has hired Shawn Green, a 26-year veteran of the Schaumburg Police Department, as its next police chief. Green, who currently serves as Schaumburg’s deputy police chief, will bring extensive operations and management skills to the position. He will be sworn in at the Oct. 7 village board meeting, succeeding Anthony Gorski, who recently retired after 37 years in law enforcement.
Meanwhile, the Beef-A-Roo restaurant on Main Street in West Dundee has closed its doors, with a sign on the locked door indicating a disconnection of gas service due to non-payment. The Rockford-based business has not provided an official statement regarding the closure, and the West Dundee location has been removed from the Beefaroo website. Village Manager Joe Cavallaro stated that West Dundee had not been officially notified of the closure of the restaurant, which opened in June 2021 following delays caused by pandemic-related supply chain issues.
