As a heatwave approaches the Chicago area, the National Weather Service has issued warnings for dangerously high temperatures. Cook County can expect a heat index between 103 to 107 on Monday and around 110 on Tuesday. Other counties in the area could reach heat index levels of 105 to 115.
To combat the extreme heat, residents are urged to stay hydrated, stay in air-conditioned spaces, avoid sun exposure, and check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors. Cooling centers are open throughout the city, including community service centers, Chicago Park District facilities, Chicago Public Libraries, City Colleges of Chicago, and Police Department District stations.
The heatwave is expected to last through Tuesday, with isolated showers possible. Residents can stay updated on cooling centers and well-being checks by calling 311 or visiting the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications website. Extra precautions are recommended for those working or engaging in outdoor activities during the heatwave.
The City of Chicago has also provided a list of cooling centers with extended hours to provide relief from the extreme temperatures. Citizens are advised to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of excessive heat.
