GOP candidates who were initially ‘slated’ will not be excluded from ballot following ruling

Illinois Republicans have received a favorable ruling from the State Board of Elections and Illinois Supreme Court regarding a law banning late candidate placement. The decisions ensure slated Republican candidates, including Jay Keeven, can remain on the November ballot. The law, introduced by Democrats, was temporarily halted for this year’s cycle after being challenged by Republicans who viewed it as a power grab.

Meanwhile, two third-party presidential candidates, Scott Schluter and Jill Stein, were removed from the ballot due to insufficient signatures, while independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was allowed to stay despite objections. In a separate case, a federal appeals court rejected a lawsuit from U.S. Rep. Mike Bost concerning Illinois’ policy of accepting mail-in ballots for two weeks after Election Day, stating that the plaintiffs lacked standing to prove tangible harm.

Kennedy has opted to take his name off the ballot in swing states to avoid playing the “spoiler” and has endorsed former President Donald Trump. The Illinois State Board of Elections confirmed Kennedy’s name would remain on the ballot. The rulings on these cases have political ramifications for the upcoming election and have drawn attention to the contentious issues surrounding ballot access and election laws.
