A former US Army intelligence analyst has pleaded guilty to selling military secrets to China. The analyst, a naturalized US citizen from Taiwan, admitted to passing classified information to a Chinese intelligence officer in exchange for money. The analyst had access to Top Secret and Sensitive Compartmented Information during their time in the military.
The analyst’s actions were discovered during an FBI investigation, which found evidence of the sale of military secrets to a foreign government. The analyst had been approached by the Chinese intelligence officer through social media and had communicated through various encrypted messaging platforms to avoid detection.
The information sold by the analyst included details on US Army tactics, techniques, and procedures, as well as information on US military personnel. The analyst admitted to knowingly violating their security clearance and betraying their oath to protect national security.
In exchange for the information, the Chinese intelligence officer provided the analyst with monetary compensation, including cash payments and gifts. The analyst also received a discount on rent at an apartment owned by the Chinese government and had their student loans paid off.
The analyst faces up to life in prison for their actions, which have been described as a serious breach of national security. The case highlights the ongoing threat of espionage and foreign influence on US military personnel, as well as the importance of maintaining security protocols and vigilance in preventing the unauthorized disclosure of classified information.
