Switzerland is the perfect destination for a low-carbon cycling holiday, with the government launching new cycle routes such as route 1291 named after the country’s founding year. This 240-mile route runs through picturesque countryside and offers stunning Alpine views, but the challenging mountains can be conquered with the help of an electric bicycle. Ebikes have become increasingly popular in Switzerland, with almost half of all new bikes being ebikes.
One traveler sampled an 111-mile section of route 1291 in the Lucerne canton, starting in Schüpfheim and ending in the town of Sursee. The route offers a scenic journey through the Entlebuch Unesco biosphere, where riders can enjoy the pristine landscapes and taste local delicacies like Heukäse and Willisauer Ringli. The journey continues through the Napf region and Swiss wine country, passing by Heidegg Castle and ending back in Lucerne.
Despite the breathtaking beauty of Switzerland, the only real danger for cyclists is getting distracted by the scenery. The trip was organized by Switzerland Tourism and Lucerne Tourism, with travel pass provided by the Switzerland Travel Centre. Self-guided tours on route 1291 with Eurotrek cost CHF1,444 and include ebike hire, six nights’ accommodation, and luggage transfers. Independent travelers can rent bikes from Rent a Bike and download maps from the Route 1291 website.
