Thousands of anti-racism protesters took to the streets of England in response to a week of anti-immigrant rioting and disorder in towns and cities across the country. Mosques and hotels housing asylum seekers were targeted during the unrest, with some shops being burnt and looted. The protests were organized by Stand Up to Racism, with up to 22 ‘Stop the Far Right’ demonstrations held in cities like London, Manchester, and Birmingham.
The demonstrations came after social media misinformation spread following a fatal knife attack on children, falsely claiming that the attacker was an immigrant and a Muslim. In response, protesters accused British politician Nigel Farage of inciting fascist rioters and marched outside the Prime Minister’s residence in support of refugees. Around 2,500 people attended the London rally, chanting “refugees are welcome here.”
Gary McFarlane from Stand up for Racism highlighted that the majority of people in Britain support a multicultural society and oppose racist and fascist violence. UK’s King Charles III also praised the protesters for standing against racism in the wake of recent unrest. The situation in the UK reflects broader challenges facing many European countries regarding migration and the rise of far-right sentiment.
