Illinois State Police report continued lack of seat belt usage among drivers – WIFR

Despite numerous campaigns and efforts to promote seatbelt usage in Illinois, many drivers in the state are still not buckling up, according to the Illinois State Police (ISP). The ISP has reported that there is still a concerning number of motorists who choose not to wear their seatbelts while driving.

The ISP has been actively promoting seatbelt safety through various initiatives, including the Click It or Ticket campaign, which aims to increase seatbelt usage by enforcing seatbelt laws. Despite these efforts, the number of drivers failing to buckle up remains high.

Seatbelt usage is a critical aspect of road safety, as wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the risk of serious injury or death in the event of a car accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seatbelt usage saved an estimated 14,955 lives in 2017 alone.

The ISP is urging drivers to prioritize their safety by wearing their seatbelts every time they get behind the wheel. They emphasize that seatbelts are one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect oneself in the event of a crash.

In addition to the potential life-saving benefits, wearing a seatbelt is also required by law in Illinois. Failing to wear a seatbelt can result in fines and penalties for drivers who are caught without their seatbelt on.

The ISP’s message is clear: seatbelt safety is not optional. By wearing a seatbelt, drivers can significantly reduce their risk of injury or death in a car accident. The ISP continues to urge all motorists to make wearing a seatbelt a priority every time they drive.
