Using Illinois EPA funds, QCA community is able to replace lead-service lines

Illinois EPA Interim Director James Jennings has announced over $43 million in funding to 17 communities for the replacement of lead service lines, with the funding coming from the State Revolving Fund. This funding will help to address the issue of lead in drinking water, particularly in disadvantaged communities that may otherwise lack the resources to tackle this challenge. The Village of Hanover in Jo Daviess County, for example, will use the $2.75 million in forgiveness funding to replace around 235 lead service lines.

Lead exposure can have serious health implications, and lead can enter drinking water through corroded pipes and fixtures. By eliminating lead service lines, communities can reduce the risk of lead exposure for residents. The Illinois EPA has previously provided significant funding for lead service line replacement projects, with over $122 million allocated from SFY 2017-2023 and an additional $13 million awarded in SFY 2024 through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The Illinois EPA is committed to working with communities to remove the threat of lead in drinking water and maximize funding opportunities through the State Revolving Fund. More information on resources for lead in homes is available on the Illinois EPA website. The funding provided will help to improve water quality and protect public health in communities across the state.
