A horse was tragically killed in Alhambra early Tuesday morning after being struck by a truck on Illinois Route 4 at Fruit Road. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when more than one horse escaped from a nearby farm. The truck hit and killed one of the horses on the highway before veering off the road and hitting a utility pole, causing it to fall onto the truck. Fortunately, the driver managed to escape without serious injuries.
Emergency responders from Alhambra and the Hamel Fire Department arrived at the scene to assess the situation. The deceased horse was found on the highway while another horse was still loose in the area until the owner retrieved it. Southwestern Electric Cooperative crews were called in to replace the downed pole, and the Illinois State Police launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
This tragic accident serves as a reminder of the dangers that can arise when animals escape from their enclosures and wander onto busy roads. The local community is mourning the loss of the horse and urging drivers to remain cautious and alert while driving, especially during late hours when visibility may be limited. Our thoughts are with the owner of the horse and all those affected by this heartbreaking incident.
