Apology from Paris Olympics Organizers for ‘The Last Supper’ Controversy

Paris Olympic organizers apologized for offending people with a segment in the opening ceremony that depicted the Greek god Dionysus and an ancient festival. Critics said it mocked “The Last Supper.” The scene featured a nearly naked man painted blue on a plate surrounded by food, as well as drag queens and models. Many Christian and Catholic organizations denounced the segment as a mockery of Christianity. The French Bishops’ Conference called it a “mockery and derision of Christianity,” while Bishop Robert Barron and U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson also expressed outrage. Telecommunications provider C Spire pulled its advertising from the Olympics in response. The artistic director of the ceremony, Thomas Jolly, defended the segment as not intended to offend or mock. He explained that the scene was meant to portray a pagan celebration connected to the gods of Olympus and reflect on the absurdity of violence. Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps also apologized, stating that there was never an intention to disrespect any religious group and that they aimed to celebrate community tolerance. The International Olympic Committee accepted the apology. The controversy highlights the challenges of balancing artistic expression with respect for religious beliefs, particularly in high-profile events like the Olympics.
