Governor J.B. Pritzker of Illinois has signed a bill to regulate new carbon capture, storage, and pipeline projects in the state. The technology involves capturing carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and industries, transporting it, and storing it underground to reduce climate-warming emissions. The law includes long-term monitoring and emergency management requirements, as well as a halt on new pipeline construction until safety regulations are finalized. The governor’s office estimates the law will create up to 3,700 new jobs in Illinois. Jenny Cassel of Earthjustice praised the law but noted room for improvement. Meanwhile, the Gun Lake Tribe in Michigan received a $4 million grant to combat climate change, focusing on implementing electric infrastructure projects. U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland visited the tribe and announced an additional $120 million in funding for tribal communities to prepare for climate-related threats. In Wisconsin, coastal communities received $1.3 million in grants to support local economies and natural resources, including funding for recreation trails, outdoor education, and invasive species monitoring. Minnesota also received $200 million from the EPA to reduce emissions in food systems, with a focus on agriculture, food storage, and waste reduction. The funding aims to improve health, economic opportunities, and climate resilience in the state.
