Team GB has had an exceptional start to the Olympic Games in Tokyo, recording their best first day since 1980 with two medals. Anna Henderson secured a silver in the women’s time trial cycling, while Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen took bronze in the women’s synchronised 3m springboard. Laura Collett set an Olympic record in eventing dressage, and Adam Peaty qualified for the men’s 100m breaststroke final to defend his title.
However, it was a mixed night for Team GB in the pool, with both the men’s and women’s 4x100m freestyle relay teams missing out on podium positions. The disappointment continued for cyclist Josh Tarling, who finished fourth in the men’s individual time trial after a punctured tire forced him to change bikes. British veteran Charley Davison also suffered defeat in her bantamweight fight, despite a strong recovery in subsequent rounds.
Outside of the competition, FIFA deducted six points from Canada’s women’s football team after two assistant coaches were caught using drones to spy on opponents. The International Olympic Committee issued an apology after South Korean athletes were introduced as being from North Korea during the opening ceremony. The French interior ministry is investigating the possibility of foreign involvement in the sabotage of the country’s rail network.
Despite these challenges, the president of the Paris Olympics remains confident that swimming events can proceed in the river Seine, while Italian Olympian Gianmarco Tamberi lost his wedding ring during the opening ceremony. Team GB’s success on the first day highlights the potential for further triumphs as the Games progress.
