Former President Barack Obama gave a long-awaited endorsement to Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s nominee for president, making her the first woman of color to potentially win the White House. In a video released on Friday, Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama expressed their support for Harris, praising her historic candidacy. Obama commended Harris for quickly securing enough Democratic National Committee delegates to become the presumptive Democratic nominee and for uniting the party’s establishment behind her. He also praised President Joe Biden for stepping aside and allowing Harris to take the lead. Harris had raised $126 million in campaign contributions by Wednesday, according to her campaign. The Obamas themselves made history 16 years ago when Barack Obama became the first person of color to be elected president of the United States. In his endorsement, Obama pledged to do everything he could to support Harris in her bid for the presidency and help her win the election. Harris, who is Black and Asian Indian, would make history as the first woman to win the Oval Office if elected. Obama’s endorsement solidified Harris’s position as the Democratic Party’s nominee and added momentum to her campaign going forward.
