Sean P. Grayson, a former Illinois sheriff’s deputy who was charged with fatally shooting Sonya Massey, had a disciplinary file that included accusations of bullying behavior and abuse of power. Chief Wayman Meredith of the Girard Police Department recalled an incident where Grayson pressured him to call child protective services on a woman. Audio recordings released by the Logan County Sheriff’s Office showed that superior officers were concerned about Grayson’s lack of integrity and lying in reports.
Grayson was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. Bodycam footage captured Grayson shooting Massey in the head as she crouched down in her kitchen. The encounter escalated when Massey rebuked Grayson and he threatened to shoot her.
The disciplinary paperwork also detailed accusations of Grayson harassing a couple during a traffic stop. The couple claimed Grayson violated the woman’s privacy by forcing her to remove drugs hidden inside her body in front of male officers. Despite these allegations, Grayson left the Logan County Sheriff’s Office in “good standing” and was hired by the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office shortly thereafter.
Grayson’s attorney declined to comment on the case. Massey’s family continues to seek answers as Grayson awaits trial. The case highlights the issue of police misconduct and the abuse of power by law enforcement officials.
