A tragic murder-suicide occurred on the Upper East Side of Manhattan on Friday, resulting in the deaths of a mother and grandmother involved in a child custody dispute. The incident took place just before 9 a.m. as people were out enjoying the day, causing panic among bystanders.
Marissa Galloway, 45, had just placed her child in the car when the grandmother, 65-year-old Kathleen Leigh of Chicago, approached and shot Galloway in the head. Leigh then shot Galloway again in the back before turning the gun on herself, taking her own life. Galloway was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
The NYPD revealed that there had been ongoing custody disputes between Galloway and the father of the child, who was unharmed in the incident. Reports of domestic disputes within the family had been documented, and two guns were found at the scene, one on the sidewalk next to Leigh and another in her tote bag.
Galloway, a retired Cook County probation officer and experienced runner, was also a beloved track coach at Fordham University. The university expressed deep sorrow over her loss and extended condolences to her loved ones. The community is reeling from the tragedy, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The NYPD Chief of Detectives emphasized the seriousness of the situation, highlighting the need for greater awareness and support in cases of domestic disputes to prevent such devastating consequences in the future.
