Kamala Harris offers heartfelt condolences to Sonya Massey’s family during phone call

Vice President Kamala Harris spoke with the family of Sonya Massey, a Black woman who was shot and killed by police earlier this month. The conversation, confirmed by a spokesperson from Harris’s office, included heartfelt condolences and an assurance of support from the vice president. Massey, 36, had called 911 to report a prowler outside her Springfield, Illinois home, but officers did not find anyone when they arrived.

Body camera footage released by the Illinois State Police showed Deputy Sean Grayson fatally shooting Massey after a tense confrontation in her home. Grayson, who has since been fired, faces charges of first-degree murder and other offenses. The autopsy report revealed that Massey died from a gunshot wound to her head.

Harris previously stated that Massey “deserved to be safe” and expressed sorrow over her death. President Joe Biden also weighed in, calling for justice for Massey’s family and urging the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, a comprehensive police reform bill named after the man whose death sparked widespread protests in 2020.

The incident has reignited debates on police violence and the need for law enforcement reform. The support from Harris and Biden for Massey’s family reflects growing calls for accountability and reform within the criminal justice system.
