Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko recently met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of ASEAN-related foreign ministers’ meetings in Laos. The two ministers discussed the development of bilateral relations, with Wang emphasizing China’s commitment to a healthy and stable relationship between the two countries. Kamikawa highlighted the need for continued dialogue on various levels to address difficult issues and explore shared possibilities.

One of the key topics of discussion was China’s suspension of Japanese seafood imports, which was imposed in response to Japan’s discharge of treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea. The ministers agreed to accelerate working-level talks on the issue and involve experts in the dialogue to find a resolution.

In addition to the seafood import issue, Kamikawa brought up other matters of bilateral concern, including the removal of a buoy placed by China in Japan’s exclusive economic zone and the quick release of Japanese nationals detained in China. The ministers also addressed tensions in the East China Sea and the need for both countries to work towards resolving conflicts in a peaceful manner.

Overall, the meeting between Kamikawa and Wang signaled a commitment from both sides to maintain open communication and address differences in a constructive manner. The ministers agreed to continue working towards improving bilateral relations and finding solutions to existing challenges.
