Apple Inc. has agreed to a set of voluntary safeguards for artificial intelligence proposed by President Joe Biden’s administration. The tech giant joins other major companies like OpenAI, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft in committing to test their AI systems for discrimination, security flaws, and national security risks. Companies are also required to share the results of these tests with the government, civil society, and academia, as well as report any vulnerabilities.
Apple’s partnership with OpenAI will see the incorporation of the chatbot application, ChatGPT, into its voice-command assistant on iPhones, bringing AI features to a wider audience. However, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has raised concerns about the integration of OpenAI’s software, citing security risks.
The use of AI technology in various industries has led to concerns about discrimination and bias in products like law enforcement, hiring, and housing. President Biden has highlighted the benefits of AI while emphasizing the need for responsible and ethical development. While the White House guidelines on AI are not enforceable, the administration is relying on companies to adhere to the standards voluntarily.
Biden previously signed an executive order requiring powerful AI systems to undergo testing for federal government purchases. Despite bipartisan interest in regulating AI, legislation has not been a top priority, leaving the administration to take action on its own. Biden is set to receive an update on the progress of his staff’s implementation of the AI directive in an Oval Office briefing.
