Illinois Democrats, including Governor JB Pritzker, U.S. Sens. Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin, and other party leaders, have thrown their support behind Vice President Kamala Harris in her bid to replace President Joe Biden. This comes after Biden announced he would not seek reelection. Pritzker, who was considered a possible replacement for Biden, cited Harris’ skills, strength, and vision as reasons for his endorsement. Many other Democratic governors and congressional members have also endorsed Harris. Illinois will host the Democratic National Convention in August, where the party will determine its nominee. The Illinois State Board of Elections confirmed that Biden’s decision to drop out will not immediately impact the ballot, as the official candidate names will not be determined until after the convention.
On the Republican side, there has been pushback against Harris as Biden’s potential replacement, with accusations of covering up Biden’s mental decline and questioning his ability to lead the nation. U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood criticized the Democratic Party’s policies as out of touch. The upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago will be a significant event where party members will determine their nominee, amidst the backdrop of shifting dynamics in the presidential race.
