The funeral for Sonya Massey, a Springfield, Illinois woman who was shot and killed by a police deputy, was held last Friday. The deputy involved, Sean Grayson, has been indicted on multiple charges including first-degree murder. Massey’s family expressed their grief and memories of her at the funeral, calling for justice and reform in law enforcement hiring practices.
The shooting occurred after Massey called 911 to report a possible intruder. Grayson allegedly shot her in the face after she threw a pot of boiling water on a couch. The other deputy on the scene attempted to render aid, while Grayson did not. Grayson’s body camera was only activated after the shooting, while his partner’s was active upon arrival.
The incident has prompted calls for justice and reform in the hiring of police officers and sheriff’s deputies, as Grayson had a history of changing jobs frequently. Massey’s family attorney, Ben Crump, spoke at the funeral, demanding justice for Massey.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker expressed his condolences for Massey’s family and condemned the actions of the police officer involved. Massey’s family and supporters continue to demand accountability and justice in the wake of her tragic death.
The Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office is expected to release body camera footage of the incident on July 22. Grayson has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
