Deputy dissuaded partner from offering assistance

Former Illinois deputy Sean P. Grayson was arraigned on three counts of first-degree murder and two other charges in connection with the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman, inside her home. Grayson pleaded not guilty to all charges. The shooting, which occurred on July 6, has sparked national attention and community protests.

Governor JB Pritzker called the incident “heartbreaking” and emphasized the impact it has on communities of color. Renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump has been retained by Massey’s family, who applauded the judge’s decision to deny bail to Grayson.

Court documents reveal that Grayson fatally shot Massey in the face while she was ducking for cover and had her hands in the air. Grayson threatened to shoot Massey and did not activate his body-worn camera until after the shooting. An expert concluded that Grayson was not justified in the use of deadly force. Despite a request for bail from Grayson’s defense attorney, the judge ordered him to remain in detainment.

The incident has drawn attention to police-involved killings across the country, with data showing that 2023 was the deadliest year for police killings in the U.S. Civil rights advocates are calling for accountability and justice in cases like Massey’s, as communities continue to demand reforms to address police violence. Grayson’s next hearing is scheduled for August 26.
